Delicious Mediterranean diet can help against diseases such as heart, diabetes, cancer and help with weight loss.

The importance of the Mediterranean diet attracted great attention in the last few years from the scientific and medical societies around the world. People in the Mediterranean have always enjoyed a delicious but-yet very health diet and science and medicine is taking notice and continue to discover the benefits of this diet. Recently, a major study published in journal BMJ showed that healthy people who followed a Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in monounsaturated fats (like olive oil), plants, nuts, wheat (such as baby wheat (Fareeka), seeds and vegetables provide thousands of micronutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can help protect against cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease, among other conditions, scientist say. Moderation is another key to healthy living.

"Research continues to demonstrate that being physically active and eating a nutritious diet of primarily whole foods that are filling and satisfying can enable people to control weight, lower blood pressure [and] cholesterol levels, reduce risk of diabetes, heart disease [and] Alzheimer's disease, and basically protect against chronic diseases," says cardiologist Arthur Agatston, MD, creator of the South Beach Diet, based on the Mediterranean diet model.
